Symon "Mel" Howard
Executive Director
Symon "Mel" Howard, a native of Newport News, Virginia, faced challenges typical of many LGBTQ+ youth in grappling with his identity, leading to struggles with depression and self-acceptance. In 2010, seeking solidarity, Mel began attending support groups to connect with others facing similar experiences. Due to the limited availability of gender-affirming care in Hampton Roads, Mel commenced his medical transition to male in 2012 in Richmond, Virginia.
Throughout his journey, Mel actively engaged in therapy, volunteered, and built community connections, gradually finding stability and strength. His commitment to personal growth and community support led him to become a founding member of Alpha Omega Kappa in January 2013, where he focused on cultivating self-love and continued his involvement in support groups and community service.
As Mel's journey progressed, he not only found stability but thrived, culminating in the establishment of Thriving Transmen of Color on April 20, 2022. A prominent voice and advocate within the community, Mel also serves as a former foster parent to many children in Hampton Roads. Mel works tirelessly to advocate for at-risk youth, is a writer for Blaque OUT Magazine, and is a vital bridge within various community networks.
